Come here a $3 mil Stradivari violin April 28 at a startup launch
Please join me the evening of Tuesday, April 28 as I launch a musician-patron matching service. I have arranged for the Duke violin faculty to perform on a violin made in 1702 by Antonio Stradivarius and a violin made in 1710 by Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andrea. This classy event offers one more chance to socialize with students, faculty, and staff before we part ways.
The performance will take place on Tuesday, April 28 at the Duke Gardens Building. I realize this is very short notice, but I had to be absolutely sure that the Stradivarius could be brought down from Boston on that day. It's not easy to line up a Stradivarius; the price tag of this violin is well over $3 million. The Strad is in excellent condition, with previous owners including a French count and a former concertmaster (lead violinist) of the New York Philharmonic.
This wont be a stuffy classical concert - instead the concert will begin at 8:00 pm with viewing of the violins and a wine, cheese, and dessert
reception. The performers will call out numbers from the stage and take questions. Afterwards there will be a party with DJ playing decidedly non-classical music.
Visit mediciviolins.com for tickets and a short video on violin patronage. The student price is $15, which covers both the concert and the party.
Party only tickets will be available later this week for $12. Partners of students can also purchase the student tickets.

GoodCompany Ventures
Came in through a Fuqua student
-Howie
---------
My name is Jessy Joyce Nadar and I work with GoodCompany Ventures, a unique incubator for businesses with social impact that has just announced a "call for applications" for the summer 2009 cycle.
GoodCompany Ventures catalyzes start-ups with innovative solutions to big, unmet social needs. GoodCompany entrepreneurs get a great place to work, a community of like-minded entrepreneurs, and access to a network of capital sources and expert advisors. We champion models that offer investors both financial return and social benefit.
Entrepreneurs accepted into the program receive extensive training and mentoring over a nine-week period, followed by a venture funding fair. Unlike other incubators, we do not extract an equity commitment from entrepreneurs, but expect a commitment of time and effort toward building a community of social entrepreneurship.
This new program was founded by Resources for Human Development, Inc (RHD), an innovator in social finance with a successful track record in social enterprises; Murex Investments, a "double bottom line" equity fund backed by leading financial institutions; and leading entrepreneurs and executives such as:
· Garret Melby, Founder, Iolite Innovation Fund
· Dr. Shoshanna Loeb, Chief Scientist and Executive Director, Telcordia Technologies
· Sidney E. Amster, co-Founder and Partner, Phase II International; Clinical Professor, Temple University
GoodCompany Ventures is currently recruiting dynamic entrepreneurs in a variety of industries, with particular interest in clean-technology, education, technology and other industries with integral social impact. The application is open until May 15, 2009, with a rolling admissions policy. The first acceptances will go out on May 1st.
I think this would be a useful piece of resource for your readers. Enclosed is a press release with more details on the program. There is plenty of general information such as timeline, application criteria, etc available on the site, but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. You can reach me at jessyjoyce@temple.edu or 510-648-9314
Thanks and take care!

Frontier Housing in Eastern Kentucky
Hey guys,
I used to work for a non-profit housing organization in Eastern Kentucky
(www.frontierhousing.org). While I was there we started thinking about ways to
change the manufactured housing industry (our major competitor). That thought
process developed to the point where Frontier Housing is now ready to spin off
a new entity that will essentially work with the manufactured housing industry.
I, unfortunately, already accepted an internship and cannot take the summer
internship with them so I wanted to see if you know of anyone who would be
interested in a full time paid summer internship with a social venture/startup. I will work with Frontier for the month of May.
Here is a brief description:
Frontier Housing, a non-profit housing organization with more than 35 years of
experience in Eastern Kentucky, has been talking to Clayton Homes (owned by
Berkshire Hathaway) for a couple of years about rolling out a new business to
sell the "Frontier" designed Manufactured Homes to other non-profits across the
country. Frontier has the contract in draft and are in negotiations with
Clayton. Their idea in this economy is to incubate the business within Frontier
for 2-3 years before it rolls out as its own entity.
Frontier has already experimented with selling to other non profits and has now
sold 5 homes to 3 others. The product offering would be homes and TA/training
to non profits on how to install, order and finance this non profit brand of
homes.
Frontier is very close to obtaining funding from the Mary Reynolds Babcock
Foundation ( they already have verbal commitment) for the first year to put
together a small team of contract employees (maybe even a virtual
collaboration) to start building the business (develop the whole business,
marketing, systems, etc.).
Frontier already has a virtual CFO in place from Beyond the Bottom Line. Diane
Korte will probably join the team and she is from The Balance Group. Doug Smith
(wrote Make Success Measurable, etc and McKenzie alum) is staying on as our
coach and consultant. He is interested to be a board member when the entity
spins off. To work with Doug is a huge opportunity for a business school
intern.
The paid internship will be in Morehead, Kentucky.
Please let me know if you have anyone in mind.
Thanks!
Maura

SEBIO Extends Deadline for the SE BIO/Plan Competition - April 8th
From: Rob Lindberg
Howie,
I imagine you’re already aware, but just in case a reminder is helpful, I want to alert you to the announcement below regarding the annual Southeast BIO (SEBIO) Business Plan competition. This competition has a life sciences focus and is an opportunity to develop, vet and present a business plan for the commercialization of a life sciences technology in your portfolio, compete for a cash prize, receive extensive mentoring from seasoned entrepreneurs and draw the attention of angel and venture capital investors from across the country. Finalists are given the opportunity to present at the annual SEBIO meeting. It’s my observation that there is a significant benefit and notoriety (the positive kind) associated with participating in the competition. Last year, the competition winner was Cerene Biomedics, a company formed and led by a team of Duke students.
Note that the deadline for entering the competition has been extended to April 8th. Additional information is available by following the links below.

Doostang email -- "We've got start-ups on the brain. Do you?"
From: Doostang <Doostang@email.doostang.com>

Subject: We've got start-ups on the brain. Do you?
To: Howard Rhee <hwr2@duke.edu>
|
| ||
Howard, Yep, today we're thinking and talking about start-ups. The Web 2.0 Expo's going on in San Francisco this week, the Twitter whale's working overtime, and company names are becoming verbs, adverbs and – dare we hope – conjunctions en masse. Many of you have written in and told us you'd like to join a start-up, and we find it hard to disagree, especially after talking to Azeem. Azeem was kind enough to offer up his experience doing BizDev for a mobile app analytics start-up, and guess what? He was an investment banker before, for those of you looking to transition out.
The Start-up Life at Pinch Media in New York What's Pinch Media? Pinch Media is a smartphone application analytics company, focused on providing app publishers with relevant metrics in gauging usage of their applications. The company was founded on April 1, 2008 (wednesday was our one year anniversary!) by Greg Yardley (CEO) and Jesse Rohland (Lead Developer). I came on board about 6 months ago, as the first business/non-technical hire. We are currently a team of 6 full-time (1 CEO, 1 lead developer, 3 developers, and myself in BD), and we are backed by Union Square Ventures and First Round Capital. Describe a day in your life doing BizDev there. Every day at Pinch is different, and I'm usually doing a variety of things at any given time. A large part of my job involves connecting with new strategic partners and potential users, as well as brainstorming opportunities with companies/developers that are currently using our service, but are looking for more. This also entails keeping up on developments in our space (smartphone applications), learning from developers and companies that are doing interesting things, and gauging strategies that might make sense for us to employ...(read more) How'd you find your job? I was particularly interested in either pursuing venture capital, or business development and/or strategy at a VC-backed startup. I reached out directly to a number of companies in the New York area, specifically those backed by some of the more prominent east coast VCs (like Union Square Ventures, in this case). I met the team at Pinch, felt positively about the opportunity; the team felt likewise, and here I am now. The one important thing I realized in pursuing a business role at a startup (and at seed-stage VCs for that matter), is that the process can be an "entrepreneurial" one, in and of itself. Pinch Media did not have an actual position in place; I reached out, and there was a mutual fit, so I was brought on board. This process is similar to that of many others I know, who currently work at startups. What has the transition from banking to a start-up been like? What advice do you have for those looking to make a similar transition? I had been looking to ultimately enter a BD/strategy role at a startup ever since I started my career in investment banking (I was at Houlihan Lokey before transitioning into my current position). I have worked mostly on M&A transactions and some private/venture-stage financings in the tech and interactive media space; so, having an intimate familiarity with digital/interactive media and tech companies via the deals I have done certainly helped. Nonetheless, at first I was a little worried that I was ill-prepared for the type of position I wanted; most friends of mine in similar roles come from a management consulting background. However, I found that my skill sets from banking were definitely transferable: systematic way of analyzing companies, modeling during fundraising, and even softer skills like tracking deal pipelines (did not realize how important this was until this job), being able to manage a general deal process, etc, etc... (read more) Has your experience impacted your career plans? How? It definitely has; I have a much clearer picture of what I like and dislike about tech entrepreneurship, and this has made me a lot smarter about my options going forward. The good thing about working for a startup is having the option to learn on someone else's account, so to speak; if/when I decide to found a company, I'll have the professional maturity of having essentially gone through it once before, which is clearly a positive. View Azeem's profile. Learn more about Pinch Media. Why do you love your start-up job? We want to know!
Finding a start-up job on Doostang Start-up job listings have found a natural home on Doostang. We're a Silicon Valley startup ourselves, and we have a strong track record of placing venture capitalists who often help their portfolio companies recruit through Doostang. Even as we type, there are a bunch of cool opportunities out there – doing BD (like Azeem!) in New York for an early stage advertising start-up or in London for a green start-up, Product management in LA for a car-pricing information service, or even online marketing for Doostang ;). Beyond listings, don't forget Azeem's point about being entrepreneurial in your search itself. Start-ups change – quickly – and most don't have in-house recruiters. What does this mean for you? That often creating the opportunity in a start-up is the name of the game. If you know a company you want to work for, search for people who work there. If you don't, check out your inside connections on our start-up listings and ask for advice. Network, be hungry, be foolish, network. Repeat. Our members have gotten jobs at AdBrite, Facebook, Yelp, The Frontier Strategy Group and more. You can get a cool start-up job too – just be open-minded in your approach. Is your start-up hiring? Post your opening on a start-up friendly budget (free), and reach the best of the best. What industries, companies, and/or jobs start you up? Drop us a note so we can feature it. Enjoy your Thursday, Team Doostang |
