Hi Howie,

A quick and final note on the PepsiCo10 as we're just under one week from the June 24th application deadline.

If you're aware of start-ups with "shovel-ready" product or service technology (in the marketplace for less than two years as of June 4, 2010) that could benefit from a partnership with PepsiCo and the opportunity to execute pilot programs with PepsiCo brands, we'd appreciate if you could bring the program to their attention. More specifics on the criteria and ideal applicants can be found here.  In addition, complete program details and an application form are at www.pepsico10.com.

The PepsiCo10 offers a terrific opportunity for the right start-ups looking to partner with one of the top consumer brands in the world.  Thanks for anything you can do to help get the word out.

Best,

Michael Gaiss

Opportunity from Greg Dale in Documentaries

We are establishing a production company that focuses on the world of sports on a global scale.  Initially, we plan to do a series of documentaries in an attempt to educate people about various issues within the world of sports.  In particular, we are hoping to investigate the world of coaching  and characteristics that separate highly credible coaches from others.  We hope to investigate the current state of youth sports with a critical eye on specialization at an early age, over-involement of parents, the negative effect sport has on moral character, and the general "arms race" to athletic stardom.  Finally, we hope to investigate the landmark legislation that is known as Title IX and how it currently affects women in sports.

A second phase of this company will focus largely on dramatic television and feature length films in the sports genre.

Hello Jon and Howie,

I received your names from Leslie Marx.  I am in the process of developing a "boutique" production company with a producer and production company in Hollywood.  The producer's name is John Carls and the production company is the Herzog Group.  Our work will focus on the world of sports.  We plan to develop and produce a series of documentaries as well as a dramatic television series and feature length films.  We have developed a mission statement and a general outline of our proposed projects.

We are interested in developing a business plan to help raise the initial funds for these projects.  We have several potential investors in mind and would like to present them with a business plan.  I thought it might be a good exercise for one or two second year Fuqua student/s to develop this type of plan.  Please let me know if this is something that is feasible and perhaps we can talk further about it.

Thanks

Global Startup Competition

April 2010

MassChallenge launched a global startup competition on April 14 with an award pool of $1 Million.

I am writing you to request your help to connect with high impact startups around the world so we can provide them with access to the resources they need to launch and grow.

We are a non-profit designed to catalyze a startup renaissance by helping the world's best early stage startups launch and succeed immediately.

What you can do to help
We will send you an email with instructions on how startups can enter. Please forward that email to every high-impact startup you can reach. We are eager to help them win.

Startups can enter online:
http://masschallenge.org/

I have included more information about MassChallenge below my signature. You can also learn much more about MassChallenge on our website. Please let me know if you have additional questions after reviewing that information.

Thank you,

John Harthorne
Founder & CEO, MassChallenge

What is MassChallenge?

MassChallenge is a non-profit started by entrepreneurs to help entrepreneurs. On April 14, we launched the first annual MassChallenge global startup competition with a $1M prize pool to accelerate the launch and success of high-growth, high-impact new businesses. We take no equity stake in entrants and place no restrictions on winners. Our sole goal is to help entrepreneurs win. We plan to run one competition annually. The 2010 submission deadline is June 11 and winners will be announced in early October.

Every MassChallenge entrant receives access to training, feedback, PR and networking support via expert volunteers from partner organizations. Around 100 of the highest-potential entrants will receive ~3 months of intensive mentorship and other free resources in Massachusetts, including premium office space and targeted introductions to customers and funding sources. The very best startups will be identified by expert judges to receive cash awards toward launching their businesses along with enhanced PR and privileged access to top investors seeking to place seed capital to work in high-growth firms. MassChallenge is a non-profit leveraging both public and private funding.

What kind of startups are we seeking?

We support all startups, but we are primarily focused on finding high impact startups, i.e. disruptive businesses with the potential for signicant growth, revenue, profit and/or societal benefit. We support early stage startups, i.e. less than $500K of investment to date and less than $1M in annual revenue. The competition is open to anyone in the world with any startup in any industry, including both for-profit and not-for-profit startups.

Fwd: Entrepreneurial Opportunity to pass around

Passed from our alum Ferol Vernon.

Howie

I wanted to pester you for help.  We're seeking applicants for this
cool internship opportunity -
http://www.viget.com/careers/product-manager-future-web-entrepreneur-internship/

Basically, we're looking for someone with the energy, interest, and
know-how to help us take an internal product (http://speakerrate.com/)
to the next level. We have it in our minds that a web-savvy MBA type
(actual MBA student or mature undergrad) would be the ideal fit. We
think of it as the coolest job/internship we have available, but we're
not getting particularly awesome applicants.  I'd love your help if
you know anyone who might be interested or if, maybe, you know anyone
at Fuqua who might have tabs on cool kids.

I know, unfortunately, that the best people are already scooped for
the summer. I figure it can't hurt to ask around and spread the word.

Thanks!

Best,

Emily

Hi there, I am an intern at Business Insider and wanted to reach out to make sure your members knew about this year's Business Insider Start Up Conference.  It's a pitch event for early stage companies for the chance to win $100,000 in prizes, including a $25,000 cash investment from General Catalyst Partners.

We have partnered with a number of venture capital firms, and NYU. Here's a link to more info: http://www.businessinsider.com/startup2010  .

If you could include this in your email list or any blog posts for your student/member entrepreneurs to see, that would be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.  Hope to see some of your members on the stage!

Job Opportunity with fast-moving startup

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Subject: Job Opportunity with fast-moving startup
To: Howie Rhee <hwr2@duke.edu>, Howie Rhee <howrhee@gmail.com>

Hi Howie,

I was recently approached by a serial entrepreneur who successfully started and sold the company Mercury MD for $50 million, to find an MBA student for a part-time Business Development/Marketing role. The student will preferably have healthcare and/or IT experience, and will initially take ownership of and help write the business plan for the company, which expects to raise funds this summer leading to a full-time Business Development/Marketing role for that student. Either a 1st year willing to work part-time next year or a 2nd year looking for a permanent job are acceptable candidates and work will start by mid-April on a part-time basis. The company is focused on a data repository and communication device solution for nurses to remove their administrative burdens and allow them to focus on clinical care. This is a great opportunity to work with a team that is seasoned and fast-moving, and learn the business side of the hospital markets.

Could you kindly post this on your startup matchmaker blog and forward amongst students on appropriate email lists? Interested candidates can send me their resume & a brief cover letter to gautham.pandiyan@gmail.com.

Thanks much!
Gautham

NAE Grand Challenge Summit in Raleigh, March 2010

National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenge Summit
Raleigh, NC March 3-5, 2010

Event Website: http://www.grandchallengesummit.org/raleigh-summit
Registration: http://www.grandchallengesummit.org/raleigh-registration
Hosts: North Carolina State University and Duke University

Entrepreneurship and technology innovation have the potential to raise our nation out of its economic downturn. Making this happen requires everyone to step outside traditional roles. In particular, centers of higher education have a responsibility to cultivate better marry technical fields with those of business and entrepreneurship.

With this in mind, Duke's Pratt School of Engineering and NC State's College of Engineering invite you to a high profile event designed to help prepare the next generation leaders to address the "grand challenge" level issues that will shape the 21st century. The Summit will touch on all fourteen NAE Grand Challenges through a discussion of American innovation and competitiveness and will be of interest to all disciplines. Participants should leave the Summit with a heightened awareness of the link between technology innovation and public policy on the world stage.

Why YOU should attend this conference:

Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE, will open the Summit with a call to action on the NAE Grand Challenges. Immelt has been named one of the "World's Best CEOs" three times by Barron's, while GE was named "America's Most Admired Company" by Fortune magazine and listed as one of the "World's Most Respected Companies" in polls by Barron's and the Financial Times.

John Chambers, CEO of Cisco, will present a keynote address on American innovation and competitiveness and will then lead a panel discussion. Chambers has been recognized as one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People," one of Barron's "World's Most Respected CEOs," the "Best Boss in America" by 20/20, and one of BusinessWeek's "Top 25 Executives Worldwide," among many other awards.

Senator Ted Kaufman will discuss Congress' response to the Grand Challenges. Kaufman is the junior U.S. Senator from Delaware, appointed for two years to fill the term of former U.S. Senator Joe Biden. As the only serving U.S. Senator who worked as an engineer, Kaufman has advocated for a renewed emphasis on science, engineering, and innovation to meet the increasing challenges of a competitive global economy.

Jeffrey Wadsworth, the president and Chief Executive Officer of Battelle Memorial Institute, will also participate in a broad ranging discussion on American economic competitiveness and innovation. During his Battelle career, Wadsworth has led a period of rapid growth as Laboratory Director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he presided over the Lab's emergence as the world's leader in neutron science, nanoscience, and high-performance computing. In 2005 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in recognition of his scientific contributions to their literature and for scientific leadership supporting national security.

The cost to attend the Summit is $20 for Duke students and faculty.

The Grand Challenge Summit Series (http://www.grandchallengesummit.org/) represents a commitment to sustain critical dialogue and engagement with grand challenge problems and to change the way we educate our students in order to better prepare them for the challenges ahead.

Come join in this important endeavor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PALMER LABS AWARDED U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY FUNDING FOR ALGAE BIOFUEL RESEARCH

Durham, NC company is member of consortium awarded $44 million to turn

algae into renewable energy

Durham, NC January 14, 2010 – U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu announced Wednesday the award of $44 million in federal stimulus funds to The National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB), a consortium including Palmer Labs, LLC, of Durham, NC.

The DOE funds will support enhanced research by Palmer Labs of its patent-pending algae technology addressing both energy and nutritional applications. "Our goal is highly focused," said Dr. Miles Palmer, company president.   "We take the biggest problems—currently in energy and food resources—and find cheaper and better solutions through innovative combinations of proven technologies. The DOE stimulus funds provide timely support of this pressing goal to us and our consortium partners."

"We are very excited about this announcement," said N.C. Department of Commerce Secretary J. Keith Crisco. "Palmer Labs is a great example of the innovation and creativity that are driving North Carolina's future, especially in the energy/green jobs sector, which Governor Perdue has emphasized as one of her top priorities for economic development."

"North Carolina is fortunate to have Palmer Labs consolidating its business here," said Lanty Smith, Chairman of Tippet Capital. "It is precisely the kind of firm which North Carolina needs to attract in today's business climate.  They have reached out to take on-board some of the best and brightest local talent and to make an important impact on the development of new technologies in the Research Triangle."

Researchers at Palmer Labs are developing innovative methods for harnessing algae to "close the carbon cycle," said Bill Brown, Chairman of Palmer Labs and Duke Law School faculty member. "Our unique approach to algae will help provide a solution to the problem of CO2 emissions and, at the same time, provide algae for both food and energy production."

Palmer Labs engineers are also designing and testing systems to burn algae to make renewable electricity. "This power system allows us to use algae to turn sunlight—the ultimate renewable resource—into electricity," said Dr. Palmer.  "Our system is designed to use biomass, natural gas or coal while capturing virtually all the CO2 emissions at a cost lower than present commercial systems."

"We formed Palmer Labs to help address many of the world's problems," said Prof. Brown.  "As we have seen with the recent U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, policy makers are struggling to devise the solutions to the environmental challenges that engulf us.  We believe that technology both delivers and is a powerful, democratizing force."
