A Simple, Online Tool for Mapping Informal Networks

Keyhubs.com was started by two Duke MBA alums to allow managers and business leaders to quickly and easily map human relationships in the workplace using web-based surveys.
Here is an example where the informal Keyhub chart reveals the importance of a manager relatively low in the formal hierarchy. He is very central to the communication and trust networks (via four incoming connections, including one from the CEO), thus the larger node size. This manager is a Keyhub in the company—something the formal org chart does not expose.

NCBIO -- Advanced Medical Technologies Center Planning Assistance

The North Carolina Biosciences Organization is seeking assistance from one or more MBA students in developing a business plan for a new non-profit North Carolina corporation ("Advanced Medical Technologies Center" or "AMTC") established to promote the growth of North Carolina's advanced medical technologies sector. For the purposes of this project, advanced medical technologies are considered to include medical devices and diagnostics, as well as other technologies that may evolve from the convergence of devices and diagnostics with biotechnology, information technology, regenerative medicine, nanotechnology and other potentially related disciplines

Upon completion of the business plan, the new AMTC will be eligible to submit an application to the North Carolina Biotechnology Center for $2.5 million in funding over the Center's first four years of operation. The AMTC will be required to match the $2.5 million launch grant with funding from other sources. In its fifth year of operation and beyond the new AMTC must be self-supporting.

Initial planning has identified the following goals for the AMTC: (i) help North Carolina advanced medical technology companies more efficiently locate required talent and services, (ii) work with existing economic development entities to attract out-of-state investment, development partners, and new advanced medical technology companies to North Carolina, and (iii) help stimulate the creation of new advanced medical technology companies based on local resources and assets. A more detailed outline of proposed goals, strategies and activities for the AMTC is attached.

NCBIO's business plan for the new entity will include (i) an organizational chart, (ii) plans for an external advisory board, (iii) a collaboration and partnering plan, including an explanation of the AMTC's strategy for leveraging existing institutions, (iv) job descriptions for key personnel, (v) a review of the market for the AMTC's proposed services, (vi) a summary of the needs of target companies and institutions, (vii) a summary of the AMTC's focus and goals, (viii) a commercialization strategy, (ix) milestones, (x) pro forma financial statements, and (xi) an analysis of intellectual property issues affecting the Center's operation.

NCBIO intends to complete work on a draft of the business plan by the end of September and to finalize the plan by the end of October.

Student assistance will be utilized through the end of October. Students will have opportunities to participate in all aspects of the business plan development process, including development of pro-formas, drafting of narrative elements of the plan, and conducting research. In addition, students involved in the project will have opportunities to network and interact with local business, academic and government leaders. Previous work experience in non-profit operations or funding, medical device or similar technology sector, or business consulting and planning will be helpful.

Smarthome team looking for MBA help

Kelvin Gu writes
"Our gadget is for entertainment. It helps you play--almost cheat at--billiards
(or snooker or pool). The device comes in a small box and hangs right over the
pool table. The camera and computer inside can see where your cue stick is
pointing. Based on the direction your stick points, a projector shines a beam
of light onto the pool table (an arrow-line shows up on the table) indicating
the path your shot will take. If you readjust the angle of your stick, the beam
of light readjusts too, in real time.

Basically, our gadget helps you make good shots when playing pool. It does the
same thing that this video-game version of billiards does:

... except in real life.

At this stage, we've built a working prototype. It's not nearly as accurate or
as beautiful as we'd like it to be, but it exists and can be optimized."

INNOVATIVE THINKING A PLUS

In search of individuals to help research, develop, market and distribute new environmentally friendly (and sexy!) moped “commuter scooters.” By utilizing the brains of Pratt, the savvy of Fuqua, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Duke, we’ll transform into fun the drudgery of commuting to work, school or the beach, and will allow millions to help save the earth from more pollution.

During development we’ll combine conventional scooter outlets with small engine
repair shops (did I mention outside-the-box thinking required?), and will establish a footprint in communities. Eventually, our company will make people proud of commuting and mowing lawns! For those interested, enthusiasm and inventive thinking is a plus, but analytical discipline and strategic thinking is a must.

INI Power - Fuel Cell company - looking for MBAs

INI Power is a fuel cell company located in RTP.

Tony Atti wrote, "Regarding an internship or other staffing opportunities we’re looking for someone who can assist in better defining one of our most important and near term market verticals. INI’s products are designed for 3 distinct market opportunities: military, consumer portable and consumer electronics applications. The consumer portable vertical in particular represents an intriguing opportunity as it includes recreational power, outdoor power equipment and UPS (uninterrupted emergency power)…these applications are diverse, voluminous and typically rely on low value solutions like lead-acid batteries or polluting diesel gensets as a source of electric power. INI has a broad market penetration strategy prepared but we’re looking for a candidate who can assist in defining the market players, applications, supply chain and distribution channels in more detail and then ultimately assisting in appropriate product placement. The upside is this effort should not only parallel much of a candidate’s business training but they’ll be doing it in a fast-paced entrepreneurial/venture-backed environment. INI has grown from 3-22 people in little over a year and the fruits of this effort are an integral part of our pro forma financials for 2008 and beyond."

Jump'n Java Cafe wants MBA help

Shelly Colburn, owner of Jump'n Java Cafe, writes, "We are a small, minority woman owned coffee shop/cafe located in Durham (near RTP) competing in a Starbucks's world, without a Starbuck's purse. We offer gourmet coffees and teas and use only quality cheeses and meats from Boar's Head, plus provide vegetarian options as well. Our questions, how best might a small business like ours effectively market itself when so many consumers seem inclined to build their own esteen by association - i.e. holding a Starbuck's cup in their hand, rather than ours? Are there any useful 'equalizers' for the small business owner?"

They are looking for MBA help.
